Oxytocin is needed for effective behaviour change.
Oxytocin is a powerful hormone that functions as a neurotransmitter and is often referred to as the feel good hormone. Oxytocin is produced in mammals in a number of different ways, gazing into the eyes of a loved one and in humans, physical touch with a loved one (hugging etc) also produces oxytocin. There is also a study out there that showed that owners and dogs gazing into each other's eyes caused oxytocin production. This new study has shown: "Learning a new task, mastering a musical instrument or being able to adapt to the constantly changing environment are all possible thanks to the brain’s plasticity, or its ability to modify itself by rearranging existing neural networks and forming new ones to acquire new functional properties. This also helps neural circuits to remain healthy, robust and stable." This research basically shows that without oxytocin, behaviour change is next to impossible. It explains why addicts can't break their habits without the support of loved ones and why depressed and or fearful dogs also have a hard time breaking old patterns of reactivity. Relationships are the key to your brain health, to learning new things, to resilience, to behaviour change!! Go hug a loved one today or gaze into the eyes of your beloved dog. https://neurosciencenews.com/oxytocin-adult-neurogenesis-22036/?fbclid=IwY2xjawH7sLxleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHb5vM_LWHihHMhXSLBfMhxGo_ALqKQltuo5uNDhVPqwEex3FbGgDOpkmHw_aem_f7QxSJ0LFVsUfOw84C61YQ
